TMB Characters Revealed!

First things first; Did you know that today is "smoke and mirrors day"? We have a Facebook Special going on in honor of this. You can purchase my favorite game, The Final Scene digital download for 25% off (today only) using promo code FINAL25 at checkout.

Surprise! We have announced the characters of Tomb of the Lost Queen! Check them out here on the Character Screen Shots page.

Here are my two favorites: Dylan Carter and our Returning Friend (as mentioned ages ago in this weekend puzzle answer post) *insert drum roll here* Professor Hotchkiss!
It may be early to deduce the actual villain by looking at them now, but who do you think the culprit is? Do you have a favorite character already? Or are you hesitant to pick a favorite for fear that your favorite is the bad guy (or girl)?

Exciting news! Tomorrow's weekend puzzle will be a contest! Stay tuned for the prize, puzzle, and directions. Until tomorrow!

TMB Goes Gold!

I was lucky enough to attend the 5-minute meeting that occurred today in the conference room with all of the team leaders at approximately 2:35 pm PST. It was momentous! We all signed off on Tomb of the Lost Queen's final build. It has gone "Gold" as we call it here.

This means that our bugs have been fixed and every little part of the game is ready and deemed "finished". Now we prepare it to send to be re-produced. Whoo-hoo!! We are getting closer to passing it on to you. Now we wait for the discs to burn and boxes to be printed. Here in the office we prepare Tomb of the Lost Queen for it's red-carpet appearance. Pre-orders begin this Tuesday! Are you planning ahead for TMB? I can't wait! (And the trailer is going through some reviews and polishing up. It is coming soon, so stay tuned, I just might give you a day's heads-up...well...maybe. I mean, I do like to surprise you....) ~.^

Sneaking In....and Out (Auditions)

Ok, I wasn't reeeeally sneaking in. I got permission, first.

Remember my checklist way back on the 7th of March right here? Yep, I am happy to say that all of those items have been checked off, including the one about sneaking into the vocal auditions, which is what I'm talking about above... and below.

After I learned when our writer was scheduling vocal auditions, I proceeded to inquire after the opportunity. *Ehem*...I nearly begged. Without having to use puppy dog eyes, he granted me a chance to experience what it was like to audition for a character in our next game.

At my appointed time, I headed down to the conference room, paused at the door to swallow my nervousness and signed in on the sheet before entering the room. What did I have to worry about? I had done my homework by reading up on the characters and practiced how I would want them to sound. After our greeting and a brief intro to who the characters were, we sat down and began to read through the provided script. Nik read through Nancy's lines, feeding me the cues to mine.

My voice sounded so small to my ears, and I focused on not reading too fast. It was a battle between what my eyes and mind processed on the the page against my mouth that could not keep up. I could not let the script scare me! I needed to stop focusing on on every detail, but instead focus on being the character, remembering the pauses, using diction, stressing the words that the character might stress, smiling at parts to change the tone. And it was such fun! There was a time or two that I asked to stop and restart, because knowing where I stumbled and going back to perfect the lines helped me to know that I did my best.

Anyways, it was a great experience. I couldn't imagine becoming a voice actor for a living, as our characters require only a few hours of recording. That's less than a day! (And we record only twice a year!) The voice actors only briefly get to see the inside of our office, and only work for a few hours while lucky little me gets to work here constantly. I get to see how everything is done, watch the entire process of how we create our games over the course of the year. Yep, I'm happy with not being a full-time (or even part-time) voice actor. As much fun as auditioning was, I want to continue working on the projects I get to work on. :)

Gearing up for TMB

Today has been a quiet Monday, and rather exciting since we are gearing up for the next round of revealing more Tomb of the Lost Queen official content. Last week was big, because as you may have noticed, we launched our page, including the screen shots section here.

Here in the office, many of the hard-working artists and production team members have already finished all of their projects for Tomb of the Lost Queen and have begun working on the next game. But alas, I cannot share with you that information until TMB has been released and the preview to ND#27 has been announced.

As for me...guess what I get to help work on? The Trailer!! With the help of creative designers, writers, and puh-lenty of helpful feedback from reviewers here in the office...it's coming together quite nicely!
As for the weekend puzzle, looks like it took no time at all! Here's the solution: [Figure out each game cover art, and count the letter in that game's title to get your letter.] Answers: [Secret of the Old Clock = T. Danger by Design = R. Warnings at Waverly Academy = A. Tomb of the Lost Queen = N. Ransom of the Seven Ships = S. The White Wolf of Icicle Creek = L. Shadow at the Water's Edge = A. The Captive Curse = T. Danger on Deception Island = E]. Put those letters together and you get [Translate]. Hmm...could you be doing a little of that in TMB? Perhaps.... ;)

On to your weekend madness. This week's puzzle is really only for fun, but if you would like, you can discuss it here on our message boards.

Sneak Peek: TMB Icon!

I decided to do some sneaking around to find you something really cool from Tomb of the Lost Queen that you haven't seen yet, so I went into stealth mode, tip-toed through the office, hacked into an artist's computer and stole this Desktop Icon:

Ok, so maybe I wasn't so sneaky as mentioned (I asked permission, first). What do you think of the fancy little scarab beetle? We hope you like it, because this little guy is what will crawl on your desktop when you install the game. No, sadly it doesn't move and won't attack other desktop icons, but it looks pretty!

Candy Phone Anyone?

What I really mean is, that if you have an iPhone 4/4s you can purchase a case for it in our merchandise store here.

I wanted to point out some images that I found rather fun. Check out the candy from Trail of the Twister! Here's Cowabubble:

There are a couple other images to choose from, but if you want the Koko Kringle image, you'd have to scroll down to the "Her Interactive" category. Why there? Because the Koko Kringle can be found in so many games that it's hard to assign it to only one title, and it's a Her Interactive icon. ;)

The Magic Mug!

Hey everyone! For a little fun today, I wanted to show you my favorite item from the Merchandise Store. Check out the Magic Mug in my demo video here:

What do you think? I'm thinking of ordering a few for my personal collection, because it was so much fun to play with. (I must have filled and emptied that mug 7 times today, just to watch it).

Winners, Prizes, and fans!

The Caption Contest winner on our Facebook page has been announced! Congrats to Julia Manns! Here's what Julia wrote:

"Ellen: You may want to check your grammar again.
Nik: Oh, I'm sure it'll be fine, no one will notice.

Ellen: Come on, Nik! Being groovy is no excuse for abandoning basic grammar."

Aaaaand, *insert drum roll here* after reading through the submissions, we randomly selected a winner from all the correct entries to the Weekend Puzzle contest: Congrats to Chelsea H. of Columbia IL! She will receive the Warnings at Waverly Academy Icon mouse pad!

(If you'd like to purchase a mouse pad, check our our new Merchandise Store here.)

Here's the solution to the puzzle:
Use [Morse] code and the ALT Code (to do this [hold down your ALT key while punching in the number, then let go of your ALT key]. Make sure you do this in a document or email or anywhere you can type so that it can show up.)

Once you have everything decoded like so: [1. L5 – B
2. R7
3. L3
4. L6
5. R7
6. R10
7. R6
8. L1
9. R3
10. L2
11. R4
12. L2
13. R6
14. L3
15. R1
16. L7 ]

Count the letters on the wheel by moving in the directions above. The end answer is [Black Cat Paw Print].

Last week we had a fan visit with us! (We enjoy having visitors and getting to show them what we do.) Here's a snapshot of me with Kendall T. And yes, I'm wearing antlers. >.<

Thanks for being such a great fan Kendall! Hope you have fun solving your new games!

The Round Keepsake Box

I really wanted to highlight this item from our Merchandise Store: The Round Keepsake box!

This box is really nice, and it fits DVDs and CDs in it nicely...hm...Nancy Drew game CDs, maybe?I have fun taking a look at how many different images can go on this box. Have you tried looking at the Moon Chunk image from Trail of the Twister? Or the Moon Lake Jr. Park Ranger Pin from Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake? I like that one because it makes me laugh how it was Nancy's reward for helping out Jeff Akers. Perhaps you are a fan of Whale World from Danger on Deception Island?

Once you have had a tour of the Merchandise store, head over to the Message Board and post to this thread here. If there is an image that you wish to see on our items, let us know! Perhaps we will add it in the future. ~.^

Starting today, we are holding another Caption Contest on Facebook! This time we are featuring Nik, our Writer with a Nancy Drew fan. Post what you think he is saying for a chance to win an iPhone cover!

All About Buttons!

Now that the Merchandise store has launched *deep breath* I can slow down and breathe, and then get all excited about the fun things to talk about, like buttons! Ok, perhaps it is a little less exciting to read about, but none-the-less important.

Have you noticed a change to our home page? There are new thumbnails! Check them out!

There is a new one that leads directly to our new Merchandise store (seen on the left), the Dare to Play Blog button has been updated (see the pink one) and my absolute favorite: The Amateur Sleuth Blog button! Yay! Now it's just one click away for those who visit our site.

Another button that we added is this one here:

This Merchandise button! (Which can be found on our "Shop" page.)
On a separate note, lately I've been adding "tags" to the end of each blog post. Why? Because it looks cool.

Just kidding.

It's for any reader who wants to read other related posts to the topics mentioned. For example, if you want to know everything about Tomb of the Lost Queen, I may have written about it or mentioned it in the past posts, so by clicking on "Tomb of the Lost Queen" (as seen highlighted below in the picture) all posts that were tagged with this subject will come up. It makes searching for past posts easier.

Give it a try! Perhaps you are silly like me and want to search every post I wrote about buttons. So you would click on "buttons" and voila! Well then, you would only get one post. >_<

Twitter quote contest is today!

Merchandise Store + New UI!

Aaah! Awesome day today! Besides the craziness of the weather here (snow flurries for 15 minutes, then bright sunshine the next), we have had an amazing day. ^_^ Ok, perhaps the snow flurries can be counted as amazing, too.

First off, we introduced to you a brand new UI (User Interface) on our Dare to Play Blog here. I know it is a big change, and speaking from my long-term fan experience (trust me, I've been a Nancy Drew fan for over half of my life) I was hesitant about a new UI. Change is hard, but I gave it a go. When I finished playing Tomb of the Lost Queen, I thought back on how much I thoroughly enjoyed the new experience.
I give it two thumbs up, and here's why:
- It looks vintage, yet modern (which is the perfect combination for Nancy)
- The look is very beautiful, with the dark wood grain and gold embellishments
- I didn't have to worry about accidentally hitting the exit button this time!
- Viewing and grabbing my inventory items was such a breeze, it was quick and easier to use
- The task list is amazing! Once I check a box off, it immediately drops to the bottom of my list, so that I can find everything left that I have to do near the top of my list.
- No more being called a "Junior" detective! We can be proud to boast the name "Amateur Sleuth" on the easier level, or "Master Sleuth" on the harder level.

It might be a bit early for you to draw a conclusion, but what do you think so far about the new look?

More exciting news! We launched our [insert bugle call here] [insert deep breath here] Merchandise Store! Oh, I'm so excited!! This is going to be the theme for all of my posts this week, so fair warning. ~.^

If you haven't seen it yet, check it out! Here are my recommendations:
- iPad Folio case with Sonny Joon's journal on the cover (from Ransom of the Seven Ships).
- The T-shirt found in The Captive Curse gift shop that says "I came to see the Creature, but all I got was this lousy T-shirt".
- Her Interactive logo Mug
- Any image on the magic mug! (This is sooooo cool! I played with this all day refilling it with water and emptying it out over and over. Talk about entertainment!)

I better save my breath and energy for more posts this week, there is too much to say, and I need to prepare a weekend puzzle. And eat some cookies. That's important, too. And also I need to remember that we have another fan visiting tomorrow! Hooray! ^_^

Thoughts on TMB Beta

Wow, we are still "running" here and working on a lot of things. Luckily I was able to check off a few from last week's list. Whoo-hoo!

I would love to tell you all about my Beta pass (where several of us in the office play through the rough game build all the way, testing it and making notes, and sending feedback to our lead tester and our designer). But I really can't tell you all about it, and that's just awful, because that's very teasing of me. ;) I will say that after considering how many people fear cliches in Tomb of the Lost Queen, I will conclude with these thoughts:

Sometimes to grab a great story in a well-known environment or situation, it's good to grab the essence of the area or theme by using those cliches, or the things it is well-known for. For example: We are going to Egypt. Can we make a game that our fans (you) anticipate without using absolutely no pyramids, tombs, mummies, hieroglyphs, sand, curses, history, or Pharaohs? Perhaps. But it might not feel like Egypt. So we did add a few of those elements, and made it into, (what I think) is it's own unique story and mystery.

I really liked this game, it has -- nope, sorry. I will not spill the secrets. >_< Ok, maybe if I keep quiet, but post an image, that will suffice? ~.^

How about some puzzle answers, aye?
A. The Number of games that features a hand holding a necklace on the box art minus one. [2 - 1 = 1]
B. The game # Legend of the Crystal Skull is minus # of Nancy’s best friends (all of them) [17 - 3 = 14]
C. The Number of paw prints on the Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake’s page plus three. [2 +3 = 5]
D. The number of letters of the name of the first character listed on the Characters page for Trail of the Twister multiplied by 2, minus one. [12 x 2 = 24 and 24 - 1 = 23]
E. The number of fish you see on the White Wolf of Icicle Creek page, multiplied by 6. [2 x 6 = 12]
F. The # of games with the Nancy Drew name in cursive writing on the cover, multiplied by 3. [5 x 3 = 15]
G. Game number for The Haunting of Castle Malloy minus the game number for Treasure in the Royal Tower. [19 - 4 = 15]
H. The number on the clock that the long hand is pointing to on the Secret of the Old Clock page plus one. [10 +1 = 11]

Now take those numbers you got at the end of each problem, and find the corresponding letter in the alphabet. A = 1, B = 2. You should get [A New Look]. Perhaps if you subscribe to our Newsletter email tonight, you will learn what this means tomorrow. ~.^

Rachel -- Rest in Peace

Today's news:

"Her Interactive has lost a huge Nancy Drew fan in Rachel Vaughn. Today, Rachel passed away at 17 due to Kidney Cancer. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, we were able to meet Rachel and make some of her wishes come true. Tomb of the Lost Queen will be dedicated to Rachel and you will see pictures of her in the game. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time."

Some team members went to visit Rachel today, and not long after they had left, she passed away. To honor her wish, she will appear in our upcoming game. As we mourn for our dear fan, I find myself thrilled that we as a company are able to make wishes come true, and invest in our fans' lives. We love doing what we do as much as you enjoy playing our games. Rest in peace, Rachel! You will be missed.

I have not forgotten about the weekend puzzle, this one is simply just for fun. Enjoy!

Nancy Drew Math

Visiting Birthday Fan!

Today we had a fan, Ellen, visit us today! She was given the grand tour, which included meeting everyone in the office, learning about design, art, testing, writing, marketing, and just about everything we could share with her.

To make it an even special day, she was celebrating her birthday, so of course we had to have cake with lunch. ^.^ While here, Ellen got to voice audition with our writer, check out the game we are working on, Tomb of the Lost Queen, and as seen below, get a chocolaty souvenir.

We were excited to have such a passionate fan of the Nancy Drew games visit us! I'm thinking I was just as excited as she was. :)

Happy Birthday Ellen!!

Total Awesomeness...

I don't have much time to talk now, because we have soooo much we are working on at the moment! (It's so very exciting!) Here's my checklist of things to keep in mind for the remainder of the week:
  • Prepare for the merchandise store (remember Sonny Joon)
  • Submit Tomb of the Lost Queen to ESRB for an official rating
  • Review the Cover Art for Tomb of the Lost Queen
  • Play through Tomb of the Lost Queen
  • Remember to de-bug the manual for Tom-- I'm just going to abbreviate TMB
  • Sneak into vocal auditions tomorrow for ND#27
  • Eat a cookie...or two
  • Prepare for a visiting fan tomorrow
  • Create a weekend puzzle
  • Gather info and art for our next newsletter
  • Test our web site pages
  • Review some web site buttons
  • Get in some toy archery practice

Mind if I stop to catch my breath? *Whew.....Ok, I'm good. :)

Breathing time's over, now I need to get back to checking off this list...time to run! Until tomorrow!

Game Question and Puzzle Answer

It's another late night, and I'm archive digging. It's kind of like treasure hunting...Nancy Drew games style. Like yesterday's post, I never know what exciting things I am about to come across. I was just as excited as you all were about finding that concept art for Secret of the Scarlet Hand.

Now I have come across something familiar, and no, it is not new, but I wanted to see if you could recognize where this cartoon is from:

Can you name the game where this popcorn man appears?

Oh! I nearly forgot! The winner for the Weekend Puzzle Contest is Britnie J. from Texas! Congrats sleuth! Here is the solution to the puzzle:

If H=RAN, A=SAW and TMB= N, then choose TOT [means that the letters in this string, HRIATMN would represent a game, going in order. RAN is game #20, so R would be #21, and I would be #22 and so on.] The letter you need is [I]. Apply this logic to the last slide at the bottom of the puzzle. You should get [D].

Shift the # of Hardy boys [move 2 spaces in the only direction you can].

Slide Quatro [this means 4] in the only direction that lets you move this many You'll get [S].

Left, middle, right. The one CRY is to ICE and VEN. [CRY is the middle, between ICE and VEN]. This means to slide [to the center letter = U]

Slide #MHM [Message in a Haunted Mansion is game #3. Move this many in the direction that has enough letters to do so].

Nancy’s __#__ case was SSH. Slide this many. [Secret of the Scarlet Hand is game #6]. Slide [6 spaces].

Pull left #STFD. [Stay Tuned for Danger is game #2]. You'll get [O].

Slide % (this number on your keyboard). The percentage sign is [on the number 5 key]. The letter you slide to is [C].

C=Cyan, M=Magenta, Y=Yellow, Black = ?. In printing terms, these are the colors that you use, and Black is represented with the letter [K]. You can learn more about print colors in The Haunting of Castle Malloy.

“D” on the phone = #?. Move this many. Just like in Secrets Can Kill, you need to take a look at a phone number pad to find the letter D, it's on [button number 3]. Slide this many in the direction you can to get [E].

Voila! Once you have all of the letters in the vertical box, it shall read [It's Unlocked]. Haha, I thought that was funny. ;-) Well done sleuths! It's looks like many of you got it. Congrats, perhaps we'll have more contests in the upcoming weekend puzzles. ;)

Monday Discoveries

First off, the contest has closed and we have picked a winner, which we will announce tomorrow with the puzzle solution, so hang tight!

It has been a super busy start to the week today. While the rest of the office is working hard on Tomb of the Lost Queen, I've been making preparations for the merchandise store that is to come. A part of those preparations includes gathering some art pieces from past games, and I stumbled across something that absolutely fascinated me!

Check it out! One of the concept designs for Secret of the Scarlet Hand! (As seen left.)

Evidently, we went with the green package design we have now (on the right), but I thought this little piece of archived artwork was worth sharing, even if it is a design path we didn't follow. What do you think? Do you like the green design or the yellow/orange design here?

Burgers and Mischief

It's March! Perhaps that alone is what scared away several people from the office today. It's rather quite in my corner, yet our CEO, Stuart, and I decided to be a little mischievous and made it look like I was going to take over our Marketing Director's office, since he is out today.

Ta-da! One small step for jackalopes on the path of taking over the world:

We also placed my mailbox over his window mailbox so that my name shows up first. And then my classic sunglasses rest on top to draw the attention.

Today for a little adventure, a group of us (also known as HerInteractive’s Autonomous Mobile Burger Understanding Review Group for Edible Recreation, or code name H.A.M.B.U.R.G.E.R.) went out for ... you guessed it... burgers. And it was awesome. Soda and milkshakes to top it off!

I'm working on the last final touches of the weekend puzzle for tomorrow. Stay tuned for contest information in Friday's post!
